Jamaican man stabs wife to death in New York

A Jamaican man in the United States has been charged with the stabbing death of his estranged wife, who is also a Jamaican.

Reports from the New York police were that Andre Curtis, 36, was charged on Wednesday with manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon in relation to the death of his wife last November.

The body of Sophia Lamb, a 44-year-old nursing assistant, was found in her apartment in the Bronx with multiple stab wounds.

Relatives of Lamb indicated that she and her husband met in Jamaica some 15 years ago, and began living together last year after he migrated to the US.

The deceased woman’s father, Audley Malcolm, is reported to have told the New York Daily News last November, that within a month of moving in with Lamb, Curtis became controlling and was put out of the matrimonial home.

Curtis became a person of interest to the police after it was reported by relatives that he had showed up at Lamb’s apartment a day before her death, saying he wanted to talk to her.

Reports from the Bronx District Attorney’s Office were that Curtis was hospitalised up to late on Wednesday, and is still to make his first court appearance.

Deadly domestic disputes involving Jamaican men – both home and abroad – have attracted national interest with a string of such incidents since last year. Earlier this week, a Jamaican man, Kevin Nelson, allegedly shot and killed the 15-year-old daughter of Jamaican entertainer Anthony Cruz and her mother inside their apartment.
